Historical Art Exhibit at the Wheeler Opera House

Published by debbie under Arts

Welcome to the Historical Art Exhibit – “Plane Elevations: Architectural Art by Dorothy Doyle” at the Wheeler Opera House Lobby on Wednesday, September 1st from 6 to 8 pm. The reception is open to everyone, refreshments will be served and the show will hang in the Wheeler’s Lobby through September 22nd. This new exhibit by longtime local artist and resident Dorothy Doyle that is opening with a reception in the Wheeler Opera House Lobby is supported by The Aspen Historical Society, Aspen.

After graduating from the Rochester Institute of Technology in New York with a degree in art and design, Dorothy Doyle worked in newspaper advertising as an illustrator before becoming a technical illustrator first for Bell Aircraft and later for Martin Marietta. After moving to the Roaring Fork Valley in 1980 she continued her artistic career as a graphic artist. Her training in technical illustration and love of historical buildings has combined to produce the work that will be shown in this exhibit. Featuring detailed drawings of the facades of 14 of Aspen’s most historic buildings, Doyle’s plane elevation artwork brings out detail not often noticed in casual viewing while still embracing the vision of each particular building as a work of art in its own right. With her work hanging in collections from Hawaii to New York, Dorothy Doyle’s unique art captures an aspect of Aspen’s past that continues to anchor our collective character: our historic buildings and architecture. The show’s art as well as giclee copies will be available for purchase with a percentage of the proceeds going to help support the Society’s ongoing programs and educational opportunities.

For more information on this exhibit or any other Aspen Historical Society programs, events or historic sites please call (970) 925-3721 or go online to www.aspenhistory.org

Aspen Historical Society Presents “Time Travel Tuesday” Program

Published by debbie under entertainment

Welcome to the Aspen Historical Society’s – “Time Travel Tuesday” series which will conclude on 31st August for this month at the Holden/Marolt Mining and Ranching Museum, Aspen, Colorado. This series will end with a special performance of the locally written and produced play “A Briefly Complete History of Aspen” to be performed at Willoughby Park. The program features three actors, 45 minutes and 130 years of history performed by Nina Gabianelli, Lee Sullivan and Mike Monroney, who also wrote this entertaining, fun and interesting romp through Aspen’s past. This al fresco performance will feature lawn seating on the grass (bring a blanket) in front of the old Skiers Chalet Restaurant near the base of the original Lift One chairlift on south Aspen Street. Rain location is the 5th floor of the Mountain Chalet. Cost is $8 adults, FREE for Society members.

These historically-themed programs — speakers, dialogues, character presentations and more — are designed to enrich your appreciation of Aspen’s colorful and intriguing story.

Funny, entertaining and packed full of the intriguing story that has become Aspen, Colorado, “A Briefly Complete History of Aspen” covers local history from the heady early days of mining success through the ranching and economically depressed “Quiet Years” and into the modern era of skis, jets and world-class culture. Join the Society’s History Players as they recount Aspen’s story with humor, song and even the occasional dance step or two (if acting like a steam train can be considered dancing!). Come prepared to learn about our colorful past in a tour de force sure to entertain while also leaving the audience with a deeper appreciation for how we got to where we are today. An abridged version of the play was recently a featured live presentation at the American Association of Museums annual meeting in Los Angeles.

Time Travel Tuesdays admissions support all Society programming and educational outreach and help us continue to bring the story of our intriguing local history to everyone. Aspen Santa Fe Ballet expands to Carbondale

Published by debbie under Arts

Aspen_Santa_Fe_Ballet

Aspen Santa Fe Ballet will celebrate the opening of its new studio with an open house on Friday, September 3rd 5:30-7:30pm in the new space at the Third Street Center, downtown Carbondale, Colorado. Light appetizers and refreshments will be served. Please RSVP to 925-7175 by August 27th.

Thanks to a generous lead gift from The Aspen Community Foundation and numerous individuals, Aspen Santa Fe Ballet has procured funding to build a new dance studio in downtown Carbondale. As of the start of the school year, this new studio will provide a home for ASFB Folklórico and a satellite location for the School of Aspen Santa Fe Ballet. The new space, located in Carbondale’s former elementary school, (now the Third Street Center), will be part of a new green facility similar in size and mission to Aspen’s Red Brick Arts Center. Complete with dressing rooms and a professional dance floor, the studio will provide many opportunities for Folklórico, as well as the ballet school and the professional company in the years to come.

Once the renovation is complete, it will be a beautiful room, with lots of natural light and mirrors—a real dance studio. It’s big enough that we will be able to offer open rehearsals and previews of our professional ballet company as well.”

ASFB’s Folklórico outreach program was founded in 1999 to provide a free, after-school arts program geared toward the Latino children of the Roaring Fork Valley. Using traditional Mexican folk dance as a tool, Folklórico inspires self-esteem, positive youth development, the crossing of cultural boundaries and community building. Directed by Francisco Nevarez-Burgueňo, the program directly impacts the lives of over 100 children, grades 1-12, in Basalt and Carbondale public schools while building cultural bridges within our community.

After nearly ten years of transporting sound systems and costumes from one valley school to another, Nevarez-Burgueňo calls the new studio “the most exciting news.” With enrollment for the Folklórico program steadily growing from “25 girls and one boy when the program began to well over 100…the schools have been great in accommodating us, but we were always limited to their schedules and whatever space they could offer at the time.” Burgueňo’s students are equally excited, “the children are so happy to have a home.”

In addition to Folklórico classes, the School of Aspen Santa Fe Ballet will offer ballet classes for children and adults beginning September 7. For information on School of Aspen Santa Fe Ballet classes, please go online: www.aspensantafeballet.com
