Welcome to this season’s 2 New Art Exhibitions by Aspen Art Museum – Artist Receptions Thursday, July 29, 2010. Jane And Marc Nathanson Distinguished Artist In Residence Marlo Pascual — First Museum Solo Exhibition; Through October 3. And Sergej Jensen first U.S. Solo Museum Exhibition through October 10.

MARLO PASCUAL: 2010 AAM Jane and Marc Nathanson Distinguished Artist in Residence

Beginning with a free AAM Artist Breakfast at 9:00 a.m., a members exhibition walkthrough at 5:00 p.m., and a 6:00 p.m., public reception with the artist on Thursday July 29, 2010, the Aspen Art Museum is very pleased to announce the first one-person museum exhibition of 2010 AAM Jane and Marc Nathanson Distinguished Artist in Residence Marlo Pascual. The exhibition will be on view in the AAM Upper Gallery through Sunday, October 3, 2010.

New York-based Pascual is the Aspen Art Museum’s third Jane and Marc Nathanson Distinguished Artist in Residence. Her AAM exhibition features eight new works created following her tenure in Aspen during spring 2010. Whereas Pascual’s artistic practice often combines photographs with found objects and light sources to create brooding, psychologically charged work, the elegant and playful interaction between image and installation is central to this exhibition. The subject matter within the exhibition focuses on images of nature and the exterior world—pelicans and a hulking ship are juxtaposed, a vitrine reveals an object recast as a photograph, a tree limb is broken into pieces and mounted on wood. The combined effect of such images with Pascual’s heightened use of sculptural elements responding to the architecture of the upper gallery extend the moody atmosphere of her work, imbuing the exhibition space with a quiet tension; the works hovering in an uneasy space between image and object.

The Jane and Marc Nathanson Distinguished Artist in Residence program was conceived to further the Aspen Art Museum’s goal of engaging the larger community with contemporary art. Each residency brings with it the chance for the public to engage with an internationally recognized and significant artist during the course of a tenure in Aspen, and results in a new body of work produced by and exhibited at the AAM. The AAM’s inaugural Jane and Marc Nathanson Distinguished Artist was British-born artist Phil Collins (2008), and the second was American artist Peter Coffin (2009). The program is endowed by AAM National Council members Jane and Marc Nathanson, whose generous gift underwrites all major aspects of the Aspen Art Museum’s Distinguished Artist in Residence yearly programming, including artist travel and accommodations, production, promotion, and exhibition-related expenses for each artist resident’s work post-tenure. The AAM’s Distinguished Artist in Residence program was first established by AAM Director and Chief Curator Heidi Zuckerman Jacobson in 2006.

Marlo Pascual was born in 1972 in Nashville, Tennessee, and received her MFA from the Tyler School of Art in Philadelphia in 2007. She currently lives and works in Brooklyn, New York.

Marlo Pascual’s Jane and Marc Nathanson Distinguished Artist in Residence and exhibition are organized by the Aspen Art Museum and funded by Jane and Marc Nathanson. Additional funding provided by the AAM National Council. General exhibition support provided by The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts. Exhibition lectures presented by the Questrom Lecture Series. Artist facilities provided in collaboration with Anderson Ranch Arts Center.

SERGEJ JENSEN

Beginning with a 5:00 p.m., members walkthrough and 6:00 p.m., public opening reception with the artist on Thursday July 29, 2010, the Aspen Art Museum presents the debut one-person U.S. museum exhibition of Berlin-based artist Sergej Jensen. The exhibition will remain on view in the AAM Lower Gallery through Sunday, October 10, 2010.

Jensen’s AAM exhibition is organized in collaboration with the Kunst-Werke Institute for Contemporary Art, Berlin. It includes 23 paintings and will be accompanied by a monographic catalogue co-published by both institutions, with essays by Aspen Art Museum Director and Chief Curator Heidi Zuckerman Jacobson and an interview with the artist by Kunst-Werke Institute Curator Susan Pfeffer.

Jensen’s poetic artworks provide a fresh approach to minimalist painting. Constructed from a wide range of textiles, the artist uses additive and subtractive physical methods like bleaching, fraying, or sewing to stand in for the traditional gestures of pure painting. Through these processes, Jensen creates breathtakingly fragile and quiet abstractions that become contemplations of the history and reuse of the chosen materials, conjuring a network of visual and visceral associations from the stains, holes, cracks and other traces of use that, in turn, become primary pictorial elements. His application of pigments, diamond dust, thread, wool, and bleach become part of the treatments whose effects—in some cases—can take years to fully realize. Jensen’s works are installed within the pre-existing conditions of each individual gallery space. As such, interior design elements such as rugs, couches, or other repurposed domestic objects, combine to create a total and unexpected environment for the viewer.

Sergej Jensen lives and works in Berlin. His work has been exhibited in major international group exhibitions, including: Of Mice and Men, Berlin Biennial (2006), and the São Paulo Biennial (2004). Solo exhibitions include: Pinakothek Der Moderne (with Henrik Olesen), Munich (2008); Schmoll, Kunsthalle Bergen, Norway (2008); Malmö Konsthall, Sweden (2008); Nomadic bags and bag faces, The Douglas Hyde Gallery, Dublin (2007); Kunstverein Bremerhaven, Germany (2004); and Kunstverein Braunschweig (with Stefan Müller), Germany (2003).

Sergej Jensen’s AAM exhibition is co-organized by the Aspen Art Museum and the Kunst-Werke Institute for Contemporary Art, Berlin. The AAM presentation is funded in part by the AAM National Council with additional funding provided by Marcy and Leo Edelstein, and Theodor and Isabella Dalenson. General exhibition support provided by The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts. Exhibition lectures are presented as part of the Questrom Lecture Series.

Welcome to PISMO Gallery at Aspen for the solo art exhibit of Scott Fraser, an American painter of local and international acclaim. The gallery will host a reception for the artist on Thursday, August 5th from 5 to 8pm. The exhibition, Transforming the Common, runs from August 5 through August 31. PISMO Gallery at Aspen, located at 433 East Cooper Ave., is open daily from 10am to 8pm.

This exhibit boasts twenty-two still-life oil paintings by Fraser. The grouping includes a range of sizes and styles – from small gems to large masterpieces, from traditional to more playful. This show provides a wonderful opportunity for collectors to experience works by a significant American artist whose paintings are included in the permanent collections of over twenty museums and art institutions including the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Denver Art Museum.

Fraser refers to his painting style as “contemporary realism.” Working from life, he brilliantly combines a traditional style that practically rivals nature with subject matters that are current and witty. In his work, he achieves near perfection in the imitation of his objects, reminiscent of 17th-century Dutch and Spanish masters. He brings this older style up to date by painting surprisingly harmonious combinations of recognizable, everyday objects such as Saltine crackers, Hershey’s kisses, or tins of Jiffy Pop popcorn. He says: “There’s a kind of common quality I’m attracted to – something that might be found in a paper plate or Styrofoam cup rather than a beautiful Delft object, Persian rug or rarified treasure.” Fraser’s brilliant fusion of two fascinating worlds makes his paintings appealing to both viewers interested in contemporary and traditional work.

Highlights of the show include Fraser’s Study in White VIII, a large masterpiece representing a grouping of cups and saucers artfully arranged atop a kitchen table. As the title suggests, the painting is a composition in white that uses light and shadow to play with various gradations of this supposed absence of color. For the more avant-garde collector is Fraser’s much anticipated Monkey Inferno, a composition of a monkey with matchsticks that teems with life and anticipates the imminent ignition.

Denver Television Network Broadcasts Weather Using New Web Cam at Glenwood Hot Springs

A new web cam at Glenwood Hot Springs will provide a live eye on weather in Glenwood Springs, Colorado for Chief Meteorologist Mike Nelson and other KMGH Channel 7 newscasters. The weather cam is the result of a partnership between Glenwood Hot Springs and the Denver based television station.

“Our partnership with KMGH is a win-win situation for Glenwood Hot Springs, KMGH and Glenwood Springs as a whole,” said Kjell Mitchell, Chief Operating Officer for Glenwood Hot Springs. The web cam features western-facing views of the Hot Springs Pool, with the Therapy pool in the foreground.

The strategic web cam location will provide KMGH and its Colorado Springs affiliate KRDO Channel 13 with valuable weather data from the Western Slope. This will be especially helpful for travelers along the I-70 corridor during the winter months. It will also give KMGH viewers a dynamic peek at one of Colorado’s favorite year-round attractions: the Glenwood Hot Springs Pool.

Already, meteorologist Mike Nelson has used a web-cam time lapse shot in a broadcast, and during the Good Morning America break for weather news, KMGH meteorologist Lisa Hidalgo updated viewers while showing an early morning shot of the Hot Springs Pool. “This is invaluable publicity not only for Glenwood Hot Springs, but for Glenwood Springs in general. Potential visitors will be seeing and hearing about us on a regular basis all year long,” said Mitchell.

Visitors can take a look at the new web cam at the Glenwood Hot Springs website where they can rotate the camera and zoom in and out for different views. Go to www.hotspringspool.com/x.php?p=WebcamWeather to see the new web cam in action.

About Glenwood Hot Springs:

Among the top vacation destinations in Colorado, visitors have been flocking to Glenwood Hot Springs for over 120 years. The landmark resort includes the Glenwood Hot Springs Pool, the world’s largest natural outdoor hot springs pool; the 107 room Glenwood Hot Springs Lodge; the premier Glenwood Hot Springs Athletic Club; the Grill, a poolside restaurant; the Sport Shop, a retail store specializing in swimwear; as well as the recently opened Spa of the Rockies offering massage and other treatments to support natural health and wellness.

Glenwood Hot Springs is located in Glenwood Springs, Colorado, between Aspen and Vail, 165 miles west of Denver and 90 miles east of Grand Junction on Interstate 70 off exit 116 at 401 North River Road or call at (800) 537-SWIM (7946) or (970) 947-2955 or visit website: www.hotspringspool.com

Fred’s career boasts many victories, including a 2005 victory at what most golfers deem the toughest playing field in professional golf, The Players Championship. Fred is also proud to have been a member of the 2003 and 2005 President’s Cup, and the 2004 Ryder Cup. In addition, Fred is only the second player in PGA history to have won in both the regular and Senior PGA tours in the same year. Fred looks forward to continuing to play and remain competitive on both tours. Although he plays a very full schedule, he always finds time for charitable endeavors and speaking engagements.

ENCORE PERFORMANCE OF DEFYING GRAVITY ON AUGUST 22ND WILL BE LAST PERFORMANCE IN CURRENT VENUE

The announcement, made at the July 1st opening night performance of The Marvelous Wonderettes, also included the announcement of the leading gift for the new tent by Bob and Soledad Hurst. The gift is the largest one-time donation the theatre has ever received and will include naming rights for the theatre. Soledad Hurst is on the Board of Trustees for Theatre Aspen.

The current 18 year-old tent in the park has undergone two major repairs, myriad wind and hail storms, multiple floods and is also the home to a few of the park’s friendly raccoons. It will be replaced by a new model and the upgrade will include a new stage, lobby and audience area. Local Aspen architectural firm, Charles Cunniffe Architects, is working with the theatre to create a new and improved aesthetic for the theatre’s 28th season.

Artistic Director Paige Price said of the campaign, “We are extremely excited to begin this campaign. There is so much momentum right now, and we’re very grateful for the enthusiasm of our audiences and supporters, as well as from the community. This tent has served us for a long time, but there’s no way it would last another season.”

The capital campaign’s goal is one million dollars, and a wide and varied menu of options for all levels of support is available. This season, Theatre Aspen began offering “I ♥ TA” premium seating for $100 per ticket, with a portion of ticket revenue dedicated to the campaign.

The current season opened with Defying Gravity: Theatre Aspen Takes on Broadway’s Biggest Hits, a concert featuring a cast of local performers, which was so successful that two encore performances will be held on August 22nd, at 6 pm and 8 pm. The late show will be the final offering in the current tent and will be a benefit performance for the campaign. Early purchase is advised for both shows, and an early-purchase discount is available for the 6 pm showing.

The 2010 repertory season also includes The Marvelous Wonderettes, The True Story of the 3 Little Pigs! and Same Time, Next Year (opening July 16) and runs through August 21st.

Tickets for all performances are available at the Wheeler Box Office (970) 920-5770 or aspenshowtix.com. For more information, visit Theatre Aspen.

For more information on the campaign, please contact Director of Development Beth Levin at (970) 925-9313 x7 or beth@theatreaspen.org.

Theatre Aspen’s 2010 season is generously supported by: American National Bank, Alex Kaufman, Hays Private Client, Jessica and John Fullerton, City of Aspen, Les Dames d’Aspen, Brenda and Jim Grusecki, Morris&Fyrwald/Sotheby’s, Maureen and Dan Holman, The Aspen Club and Spa, Soledad and Bob Hurst, Mandy Gray and Randy Work and Melinda Goldrich.

Welcome to David Floria Gallery for the opening of its third solo exhibition of new drawings and sculptures by internationally renowned artist James Surls from July 16 to August 11, 2010. The exhibition will consist of eleven drawings and seven Sculptures.

Schedule: July 16 – August 11, 2010
Opening Reception for the Artist: Friday, July 16, 6-8 pm

James Surls is primarily known for his sculptures which are made of hand-carved wood and welded steel, or cast bronze. His imagery is somewhat classifiable into two groups. His flower works are stylized, geometric constructions of pointed petals on steel structures either free-standing, or wall-mounted. Surls also creates more iconic and figurative compositions which combine images of eyes, faces, houses and knives. The artist’s drawings incorporate many of the same lexicon of images with the important addition of an emphasis on the timeless mystery of male and female interconnection, the male artist’s muse and the male/female balance within us all.

The following is a statement by the artist regarding the works in this exhibition:

“The titles of the art in any given exhibition reveal much about the centered (true) nature of that exhibition. These titles give direction, and set motion about the collected reality of me as an artist. “She is Again” – - – “She Sees between the Totals” – - – “At Which Two Things” – - – “She Gives Again” – - – “Looking through the Dark Moon” – - – “String Tie Theory – - – “Her world” – - – “To Begin, Set Going” – - – “State of Arrangement” – - – “Me and Ascot Ash.” – - – and the last drawing on the list is the newest one called, “All I Ever Really Wanted Was to Go Home with You.”

The titles of the sculptures are as follows: “Walking Bronze Eye Flower” – - – “Small Needles on Rings” – - – “Rough God” – - – “Snake Head” – - – and then a wooden house called, “All I Ever Really Wanted was to Go Home with You.”

All of this art is “titled,” and all of the titles tell you something. Seven of the drawings are about “Her,” the Her “that is part of me” – “that makes me whole” -( both titles of two more drawings that exist only in concept ), (a general notion of something formed by mentally combining all its characteristics; a construct.) I conceive in mind the world around me in real. Art, my art, is made of participating with mind as though it were tangible–art, from the intangible to the tangible. How does a flower, made of bronze, walk? How do three needles get on seven rings, seven times interlocking each to each. Is God rough? Does God need the Devil? If you cut yourself, would you feel the pain? Do you take responsibility for all that you are? Consciousness should set you to full awareness, and understanding for “it” being what it is. I do look through the dark moon, and I do live in the state of Arrangement, arranged by Fate and the Will of the Wisp…both being close at all times. I am aware of “Me” as me being me looking into the eye’s of the Rough God. I am aware of me being the ash of many things, knowing that wind cares not of dust, and she does see between the Totals. And all I ever really wanted was to go home with her. To be and to be for all ways in her World.

I am doing this show at the David Floria Gallery because it is important, these are not objects that will decorate your house, but rather something that will make you look deeper into your own Being.”

About James Surls:

James Surls was born in Terrell, Texas, in 1943. He grew up exploring the woods and swamps of east Texas where he learned the lore of nature and about wood as a material to create his conjured spirit figures and flowers. After a very successful 22-year career working out of Splendora, Texas, he and his wife, artist Charmaine Locke and their five daughters moved to the Roaring Fork Valley in 1998. Surls work is represented in the collections of important art museum collections throughout the United States, Europe and Latin America, including: The Museum of Modern Art, New York, NY; The Whitney Museum of American Art, New York, NY; Los Angeles County Museum, Los Angeles, CA; Solomon R Guggenheim Museum New York, NY; San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, San Francisco, CA; Centro Cultural Arte Contemporaneo Mexico City, Mexico; Houston Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, Texas; Stedelijek Museum Amsterdam, Holland; Museo de Arta Contemporaneo de Caracas, Caracas, Venezuela.

Please contact the gallery for more information at (970) 544-5705. The exhibition is available at floriagallery.com.
