Starting around the noon hour, local restaurants offer Cajun cuisine, hurricane drink specials, and crawdad boils. An enormous King Cake sponsored by new Base Village restaurant The Sweet Life is given out on the Mall at 1 p.m., while adults and children can Make Your Masquerade at 2 p.m. to get ready for the parade. A free kids’ carnival at 2 p.m. includes clowns and face painters. The annual Bead Throw at 3 p.m. tosses nearly 30,000 beads and prizes into the crowds. The wildest, wackiest parade in the mountains follows at 4 p.m.

Snowmass celebrates 27 years of Fat Tuesday revelry with the biggest Mardi Gras bash in the mountains. This authentic celebration that originated with New Orleans natives themselves starts off with the The Mother of All Ascensions, a wild, costumed, 1,741-foot vertical, uphill race at the crack of dawn. Non-stop action follows all day long, including King Cake giveaways, a bead and prize throw, crawdad boils, live music, a wild costumed parade, mask-making & face painting for kids and partying late into the night at local bars.
